Supercharge your pond's food chain and grow bigger, healthier fish with Farmers Favorite 20-20-5 Fish Pond Fertilizer. This premium, water-soluble granular blend is specifically formulated to stimulate the growth of beneficial phytoplankton (microscopic algae)—the foundation of a highly productive freshwater pond.
By feeding the phytoplankton, you kickstart a natural food chain: microscopic zooplankton feed on the algae, small baitfish and bluegill feed on the zooplankton, and your trophy largemouth bass feed on the baitfish. Regular application can double or even triple your pond's annual fish production!
High-Phosphorus & Nitrogen Formula: The 20-20-5 ratio is optimized specifically for aquatic environments, where phosphorus is the primary limiting nutrient for plankton growth.
Creates a Healthy "Plankton Bloom": Shades out the pond bottom to help block sunlight, naturally preventing the growth of problematic, rooted underwater weeds and filamentous pond scum.
Highly Soluble Granules: Designed to dissolve efficiently in water, ensuring rapid nutrient uptake without settling directly into the bottom mud where it can get trapped and wasted.
Boosts Carrying Capacity: Safely increases the amount of fish your pond can support by drastically increasing available natural forage.
Total Nitrogen (N): 20% — Feeds the initial plankton bloom.
Available Phosphate ($P_2O_5$): 20% — The most critical nutrient for triggering rapid aquatic plant food chain development.
Soluble Potash ($K_2O$): 5% — Supports overall aquatic plant health and stability.
When to Start: Begin application in early spring when water temperatures consistently reach 60°F.
How to Apply: Do not dump the fertilizer directly on the pond bottom, as the mud will lock up the phosphorus. Instead, dissolve the granules in water first and spray/pour it evenly over the surface, or place the fertilizer on a submerged platform (roughly 12 to 18 inches below the surface) to let it dissolve naturally into the water column.
Measuring Success (The Secchi Disk Test): Aim for a green/light brown water clarity where a white object is visible down to 18 to 24 inches. If visible deeper than 24 inches, apply more fertilizer. If visible less than 12 inches, stop fertilizing to avoid oxygen depletion.
